How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign uses a series of clear, plastic aligners to gradually move your teeth into position. These aligners are created using a state-of-the-art 3D computer imaging system, which means they’re custom made to your teeth. A bit like a thin sports mouthguard, the aligners fit snugly over your teeth, gradually straightening them using gentle forces.

Invisalign fits perfectly into your everyday life, needing no change to your diet, lifestyle or routines. The aligners are removable, so you can eat and drink whatever you wish during treatment and won’t have any trouble cleaning your teeth afterwards. All you need to do is wear each comfortable aligner for 22 hours per day to ensure the best results.

Invisalign for adults

Invisalign for fast results

Much like conventional orthodontic treatment, the length of time required to wear Invisalign aligners varies between patients. However, on the whole, most Invisalign treatment lasts between 12 and 24 months.

If you only require minor treatment, Invisalign has two fast treatment options:

Specifically for cases affecting the front six teeth, Invisalign Lite can get results in as little as six months.

  • Will I find my Invisalign aligners uncomfortable or painful?
    Your aligners are carefully and accurately designed with comfort in mind, using precise digital technology. They have a snug, comfortable fit, making it easy to wear them for 22 hours per day and ensure your treatment is as effective and successful as possible. The aligners have no metal brackets or wires which could cause irritation, and are not painful.
  • Will Invisalign affect or change my speech?
    When your aligners are first fitted, you may notice changes to your speech, including a slight lisp. Don’t worry - this is temporary and will only last a few days, as you get used to the feeling of the aligners in your mouth. You will be talking clearly and confidently again in no time.
  • What are Invisalign aligners made of?
    The clear aligners are made from strong flexible plastic. The Invisalign system uses a specially developed and patented thermoplastic material called SmartTrack.
  • Which orthodontic issues can Invisalign help with?
    Invisalign can help with a range of mild to moderate orthodontic issues, including overcrowding, misalignment, bite problems and gaps. Your dentist will be able to talk you through your options, and how Invisalign can help improve the appearance of your smile, at your initial consultation.
  • What happens after my Invisalign treatment is complete?
    When your treatment is complete, start showing off your new smile! You will need to wear a retainer to keep your teeth in their new straighter positions, which will be custom made for you. We recommend you wear your retainer full time at first, moving to a more part time basis, usually overnight, over time. Your dentist will give you tailored advice based on your individual case. You should wear your retainer part time for as long as you want your new smile to stay straight.
  • Will other people be able to tell I am wearing Invisalign aligners?
    The aligners are completely clear and virtually invisible when worn. As they are very thin and fit snugly over your teeth, they are incredibly discreet. Often, the only way other people know you are having Invisalign treatment is if you tell them!
